Get others to recommend your web site From the search engine’s perspective, if lots of other web sites are linking to your web site, then you must have good relative content on your site. The job of the search engine is not to promote web sites, but to provide users with good search results. If they serve up good search results, people will continue to use that search engine. If you have a link from another web site back to your web site, the search engines see this as a vote for your web site. The more sites that link to yours, the more votes you have. How do we get inbound links? Well the two methods described above will automatically do that for you over time. If you have valuable free information, people will link to it and by submitting articles and letting people use them for free will get you inbound links as well. What else can we do? Well we can simply ask for a link to our site. Find other web sites that are related to your business - but do not compete with you. Tell them that you will provide a link to their site from yours in exchange for a link back. Make sure you find sites that make sense to link to because not all links are the same. Only links from other sites that are relevant to your site are considered valuable. If you are selling horse feed, links from a sites about farming and agriculture would be seen as valuable but links from a dress shop would not. This is a slow process, but builds over time. It also provides a resource area on your web site of useful information from around the Internet. Once again, if your site useful and resourceful, people will keep coming back. Now there is a downside to link exchange. When it comes to SEO, it seems that methods that work will eventually get exploited and it ruins it for all those who are trying to do things ethically. So is the case with link exchange. It is still an important factor in search engine placement, but as we mentioned it only valuable from relevant sites. There are sites called "link farms" out there that simply contain lists on links. They will list you (often for a price) and the purpose is to increase the inbound link counts of sites by artificially populating inbound links to a site. This exploits the whole concept, and that is why only good relevant inbound links count. In fact it can have a negative effect on your ranking on search engines if they consider you are getting artificially generated links. |
